“It doesn’t make any sense,” Jade said for the umpteenth time, unable to stop herself as she walked alongside Gunny. This turn of events was so unexpected that she was having trouble processing what was happening. “Henry wouldn’t have done this. He couldn’t have. How would he have taken possession of me or even paid Mykelti in the first place?”

Jade and Gunny had immediately changed course after Starr’s call and made their way to the private airstrip where a chartered plane would take them to Corpus Christi, Texas. Gunny had parked the SUV in the small parking lot and then gathered up what belongings they had with them before Gunny guided her inside the rather large warehouse building. There was quite a bit of empty space inside, but it didn’t appear they were staying here long among some older aircraft. Gunny nodded toward one of the employees as if they’d known each other, not bothering to stop and talk to him as they continued to walk through the hangar. Jade realized he probably did know the employee and wondered if Red Starr used this private airstrip often.

“Carrick’s only request before he gives a full statement is to speak with you.” Gunny strolled out the open hangar doors and across the hot tarmac to where a Gulfstream G-550 was waiting. The stairs were already extended down from the jet from directly behind the cockpit leading the way inside. The tail fin sported a red five-pointed star with the red capital letters HRT below it. “We’ll find out what we need to know then.”

“It sounds as if you don’t really believe Henry is guilty either,” Jade guessed, grateful Gunny had finally broken his silence and spoken to her. He’d only told her what Starr had said and then immediately drove an hour in the opposite direction to where they would meet Starr, Doc, and Stick once The Promised Land had pulled into the harbor safely. Apparently, Daegan, Trigger, and Diesel were staying behind to oversee the release of the crew for shore leave and ensure their headquarters were secure after the threat on the team. Neither Gunny nor Jade had brought up the fact that he’d kissed her. “You mentioned he didn’t have a lawyer. That’s really odd. Henry is financially stable and he’s smart enough to realize he needs counsel.”

Gunny didn’t reply, but instead led the way inside the cabin of the G-550. The aircraft was a luxury business jet variant of the Gulfstream V. The main cabin was divided into two main areas with ten large cream-colored leather swivel seats located up front and two private chairs in the rear facing a similarly draped couch, which seated three. Polished wood grained tables were situated throughout the cabin to allow the passengers to sit across from one another as if seated in a well-appointed living room with a coffee table in between. The jet was obviously designed for luxury, comfort, and world-class speed.

Jade could see that Gunny wasn’t pleased with the decision to take her to Corpus Christi.
